What Credit Score Do You Need for a Car, a Mortgage and Renting in the US: Benchmarks for 2026

“What score do I need to get approved?” is one of the most common questions we hear. The honest answer: there is no single number. But there are clear benchmarks for a car, a mortgage, renting and cards, and there are things that matter just as much as the score itself. We have gathered them in one place.

Key points

  • There is no single minimum credit score for credit in the US: every lender has its own requirements, and they change.
  • For a car loan there is usually no official minimum, but the rate and the total interest depend heavily on your score.
  • For an FHA mortgage the benchmark is 580 with a 3.5% down payment, and for a conventional mortgage banks often keep their own threshold around 620.
  • Landlords in Los Angeles often want to see 620–650 or higher, but they also look at income and at debts to previous landlords.
  • Besides the score, lenders look at income, debt load, down payment and fresh negative items on the report.

Why there is no single “required” number

A score is not a pass with a fixed bar. Every bank, dealer and landlord decides how much risk they are willing to take. One bank will approve a car at 600, another will deny at 650. Sometimes even the same bank behaves differently in different months.

On top of that, different lenders look at different versions of the score. Car loans often use a special auto FICO, mortgages use older FICO versions, and since 2026 mortgage lenders can use VantageScore 4.0. That is why the score in an app and the score at a bank may not match. How these models work is explained in the article FICO vs VantageScore: what is the difference.

Score benchmarks for the main goals

Below are the benchmarks we most often see among Excalibur Credit Solutions clients and in lenders' public requirements. These are not rules, but a starting point to understand where you are now.

Car loan: the score decides not “if” but “at what rate”

In the US you can buy a car with almost any score. Dealers work with dozens of banks, including those that specialize in clients with bad credit. But the price is different. Lenders divide borrowers into tiers: from “super prime” with a high score to “subprime” with a low one. The lower the tier, the higher the rate.

That is why before buying a car it pays to spend a few months on your score: lower utilization, deal with errors on your report, avoid opening new cards. How to approach buying an expensive car is covered in the article car loan for a luxury car, and pre-approval — in the guide auto loan pre-approval.

Mortgage: what changed in 2025–2026

For a mortgage the score is especially important: both approval and the rate for 30 years ahead depend on it. The softest option for many immigrants is FHA: 580 and up with a 3.5% down payment. With a score from 500 to 579, FHA allows a loan, but with 10% down or more, and not every bank will do it.

Banks may set requirements above these benchmarks.

Since November 2025, Fannie Mae no longer requires a minimum of 620 for applications that go through its automated underwriting: the system evaluates the whole file. And in 2026 mortgage lenders gained the right to use VantageScore 4.0 instead of classic FICO. It sounds like a relaxation, but in practice many banks and mortgage insurers still keep their own threshold. So a benchmark of around 620 for a conventional mortgage still holds for now.

Another mortgage detail: the bank usually takes not one score but the middle of three bureaus. If you have an error at one bureau, it can drag the whole application down. How a bank looks at income and debts is explained in the guide mortgage and DTI.

Renting: score plus income

Landlords in Los Angeles often want to see a score of 620–650, and in new buildings with property management companies sometimes higher. But for renting, the score rarely decides everything. Income matters more, usually 2.5–3 times the rent, along with no debts to previous landlords and no evictions. You can rent without a history too, with a co-signer and documents. More on this in the article credit history and renting an apartment.

What matters besides the score

A good score opens the door, but it is not an approval yet. Here is what lenders look at along with it:

  • Income and its stability. How much you earn and how long you have been at this job or in this business.
  • Debt load (DTI). What share of your income already goes to loan payments.
  • Down payment. The bigger it is, the lower the bank's risk and the softer the score requirements.
  • Fresh negative items. A late payment from three months ago weighs more than one from five years ago.
  • New inquiries and accounts. Many applications in a short time look like looking for money at any cost.
  • Depth of history. A 700 score with one card and six months of history is not the same as 700 with ten years.

If your score is lower than you expected, first understand why. Common reasons are covered in the article why your credit score is low.

How Excalibur helps you prepare for a big application

During the free review, an Excalibur Credit Solutions manager looks at your three-bureau report with a specific goal in mind: a car, a mortgage or renting. They will show where you stand relative to the benchmarks and what is pulling your score down. If the report has inaccurate, outdated or unverified entries, after payment our technical team works with the bureaus. If your history is thin, the manager will tell you about credit lines. Results are individual.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum credit score for a car loan?

There is usually no official minimum: you can buy a car with almost any score. But the lower the score, the higher the rate, and the interest over 5 years can differ by thousands of dollars.

What credit score do I need for a mortgage in 2026?

For FHA the benchmark is 580 with 3.5% down, or 500–579 with 10% down or more. For a conventional mortgage, Fannie Mae removed the hard 620 floor, but many banks still keep their own minimum around that number.

What credit score do I need to rent an apartment?

There is no single bar. In Los Angeles, landlords often want to see 620–650 or higher, but they also look at income and rental history. Without a history, a co-signer and proof of income help.

Why does the bank see a different score than my app?

Banks use different score models and versions: auto FICO, mortgage FICO versions or VantageScore 4.0. An app often shows a different model, so the numbers can differ noticeably.

How long does it take to prepare my score for a mortgage?

It usually makes sense to start 6–12 months ahead. That is enough to lower utilization, deal with errors on your report and avoid opening extra accounts. Timing is individual for everyone.
