Credit Without an SSN: How to Get a Credit Card and Build Credit History with an ITIN

Getting credit without an SSN, with just an ITIN, is possible. You don't have to wait for your SSN: start your credit history now, and by the time it arrives, you will have a solid base instead of zero.

Key points

  • Without an SSN, you can start a credit history in the US with an ITIN, a tax number issued by the IRS. As of 2026, banks that accept ITIN applications include Capital One, Chase, American Express and Bank of America.
  • Credit bureaus keep a file under your ITIN the same way they do under an SSN. A credit score with an ITIN is calculated by the same rules, from 300 to 850 points.
  • With an ITIN, banks more often ask you to come to a branch or to open an account with them first. Government-backed mortgages like FHA loans and Excalibur's credit boost (when you are added as an authorized user on someone else's card) are available only with an SSN.
  • When you get an SSN, your ITIN credit history will not move over to it on its own. Give your new number to every bank, and check your reports from all three bureaus 1–2 months later.
  • A CPN, or a “credit number instead of an SSN,” is fraud: putting that kind of number on a credit application is a crime.

ITIN vs. SSN: what is the difference?

An SSN (Social Security Number) is the main personal ID number in the US. It is issued to citizens, green card holders and people with work authorization. Employers, banks and the tax office use this number to identify you.

An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax number. The US tax agency, the IRS, issues it to people who have to pay taxes but are not eligible for an SSN. It is also nine digits long, but it always starts with a nine.

An ITIN is only for taxes. It does not give you the right to work, and it does not change your immigration status. But for banks, it is an official number you can use to open an account and apply for credit.

Can you build credit without an SSN, using only an ITIN?

Yes. Credit bureaus are the three companies that collect credit history: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. They identify a person by name, date of birth, address and ID number. If your application has an ITIN, the bureau opens a file under that number. After that, your bank reports to the bureau every month on how you pay your card.

A credit score is a rating in points that shows how reliable you are as a borrower. With an ITIN, it is calculated the same way as with an SSN, and the scale is the same, from 300 to 850 points. The rules are the same too: pay on time, don't max out your limit, and don't send many applications in a row. The formula has no “discounts” or “penalties” for an ITIN.

At Excalibur Credit Solutions, we often meet people who have paid taxes with an ITIN for five years and are sure credit is “not for them.” Then the SSN arrives, and there is still no credit history. Years are lost, and they have to start from zero.

Even if Aliya had a credit history in Kazakhstan, it will not count here, just like credit history from Russia or Ukraine. And a general plan for your first year in the US is in how immigrants can build credit in the US with no credit history.

Which banks give credit cards with an ITIN in 2026?

A quick disclaimer first: bank rules change. The list below is based on public information as of fall 2026. Before you apply, check the terms on the bank's website or by phone.

  • Capital One. You can apply with an ITIN online, by phone or at a branch. A good card to start with is the Platinum Secured: a deposit of $49 to $200 opens a credit limit starting at $200.
  • Chase. Accepts ITINs: the online form lets you choose your type of tax number. For people with no credit history, there is the Freedom Rise card. Your chances are better if you already have an account with Chase.
  • American Express. Since August 28, 2023, you need an SSN or ITIN to apply for a personal card. You can no longer apply with just a passport. With a completely empty credit history, Amex approves people less often, so it is more of a second card than a first one.
  • Bank of America and Citi. They also accept ITINs. It is usually easier if you already have an account with that bank. Sometimes they ask you to come to a branch.
  • Credit unions. These are small banks for their members. Some of them offer cards and small loans with an ITIN to help you start a credit history. Ask at the ones in your city.

Sometimes an online form has only a field for an SSN, with no option to choose ITIN. Do not just type your ITIN there and hope for the best. Call the bank and ask how they take applications with an ITIN.

How do you apply if you only have an ITIN?

  1. Make sure your ITIN is active: you have filed a tax return with it at least once in the last three years.
  2. Open a checking account at the bank where you want to get a card. Let your income go into it for at least 2–3 months.
  3. Find out in advance how the bank takes ITIN applications: online, by phone or only at a branch.
  4. Gather the documents from the list below so you do not have to go to the bank twice.
  5. Apply to only one bank. The bank will pull your report, and a mark will appear on it: a hard inquiry. One such mark lowers your score just a little. But five marks in a couple of weeks will make any bank cautious.
  6. If you get denied, read the letter that explains the reason. Fix it, and only then apply again, usually after a few months.

What to bring for an ITIN application

  • The IRS letter with your ITIN (it is called CP565)
  • Your passport or another photo ID
  • Proof of your US address: a lease or a utility bill
  • Proof of income: a tax return, Form 1099 or bank statements
  • Your account number at this bank, if you have one
  • A US phone number in your name
Copies and originals: at a branch, they usually want to see your documents in person

What is harder with an ITIN?

Here are the downsides, honestly, so there are no surprises:

  • Fewer card options. Some banks do not accept ITINs. The ones that do usually approve starter cards and secured cards first.
  • You more often need to go in person. Some banks process ITIN applications only at a branch, or ask you to open an account with them first.
  • Checking your report online is harder. Many services cannot verify your identity without an SSN. In that case, you request your report from each bureau by mail, with a copy of your ID and proof of address.
  • Mortgages. Government programs like FHA require an SSN. With an ITIN, people buy homes through special mortgages from private lenders. The down payment there is usually 10–20% or more, and the rate is higher than usual.
  • Car loans. Some credit unions and dealers offer them, but often with a large down payment and a higher interest rate.

And to be honest about our own service. Excalibur's credit boost is when you are added as an authorized user on someone else's verified credit line. That account then shows up in your credit history too. But we only do the boost with an SSN. While you have an ITIN, we build your history on your own cards, and we come back to the boost once your SSN arrives.

What should you do when you get an SSN?

This is an important step, and people often miss it. The credit history you built with your ITIN will not link to your SSN on its own. If you simply start using the new number, the bureau may open a second, empty file. Then a bank will see a “newcomer” with no history, while your years of on-time payments stay in the old file.

Your SSN arrived: how to move your credit history from your ITIN

1Tell the IRSThe IRS will link your tax records to your SSN. After that, you no longer need your ITIN
2Call every bankCards, loans, a phone on a payment plan: every account opened with your ITIN
3Ask them to replace your ITIN with your SSNThe bank will send the updated information to the bureaus with its next report
4Check your report after 1–2 monthsAt all three bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion
5Make sure your accounts are thereOld accounts should show their original opening dates
It usually takes 1–2 months, but every bank and bureau moves at its own pace

If an account did not move over, or a bureau opened a second file, write to that bureau. Attach a copy of your ITIN letter and a copy of your Social Security card, and ask them to merge the files. It is better not to open new credit under your SSN until your old accounts are back in place.

CPN: why a “credit number instead of an SSN” is a trap

CPN (credit privacy number) is what sellers call a nine-digit “credit number” that you can supposedly use on applications instead of an SSN. They sell it on social media and through people you know, for tens or hundreds of dollars. They promise a “clean history” and a high score within a month.

The truth is simple: there is no official “credit number.” What is sold as a CPN is often someone else's real SSN: a child's, an elderly person's or a dead person's. Putting that number on an application means lying to the bank about who you are. This is a crime, not a “gray area.”

What happens next is usually the same. The bank notices the number belongs to someone else and closes the account. The debt stays, and it can even lead to a criminal case. Nobody will give you back the money you paid for the “number.” Warning signs of this kind of offer:

  • You are offered a “new number” or a “new credit identity” instead of an SSN.
  • They promise a specific score and timeline: “you'll have 700 in a month.”
  • They say it is “for privacy” and that “everyone does it.”
  • They ask for payment by money transfer or crypto and do not give you a contract.

Excalibur Credit Solutions does not work with CPNs and never recommends them to clients. There is only one honest way to build credit without an SSN: an ITIN and real accounts in your name. It is slower, but the history is truly yours. That is exactly the path Aliya chose. If you are also starting with an empty report, take a look at our guide building credit from scratch: first steps.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get a credit card without an SSN?

Yes, if you have an ITIN, a tax number issued by the IRS. As of 2026, banks that accept ITIN applications include Capital One, Chase, American Express and Bank of America. For a first card, banks most often approve a secured card or a starter card for people with no credit history.

Which banks give credit cards with an ITIN?

Based on public information as of fall 2026: Capital One, Chase, American Express, Bank of America, Citi and some credit unions. Terms change, so check with the bank before you apply. Your chances are usually better where you already have an account.

Does credit history transfer from an ITIN to an SSN?

Not on its own. When you get an SSN, give it to the IRS and to every bank where you have accounts. Ask the banks to replace your ITIN with your SSN. After 1–2 months, check your reports from all three bureaus: your old accounts should show their original opening dates.

Can you get a mortgage with an ITIN?

Yes, but not through government programs like FHA, which require an SSN. Private lenders offer special ITIN mortgages, usually with a down payment of 10–20% or more and a higher-than-usual rate. A good credit history under your ITIN helps you get better terms.

Is a CPN legal?

No. A CPN, or a “credit number instead of an SSN,” is a fraud scheme: what is sold under that name is often someone else's real SSN. Putting a CPN on a credit application is a crime, and a purchased number gives you no real credit history.

How can I check my credit report if I only have an ITIN?

Many online services cannot verify your identity without an SSN. In that case, you request your report by mail from each bureau: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. With your letter, include a copy of a photo ID and proof of address. An Excalibur manager can tell you which way is easier in your situation.
